レジェンド葛西、ラージヒルの結果に関係なく、平昌を目指してたのか 〜ニューヨーク・タイムズから
レジェンド葛西のラージヒル、土曜の深夜で、偶然3時頃まで電話してたこともあり、つい見てしまう。いや、2回目は27人目ぐらいまでうとうとしていたが、葛西のジャンプで完全に目が覚めた。Twitterのタイムラインも5時頃にもかかわらず結構流れていた。結果が出た直後のFacebookにもかなり反応があった。
生年月日がほぼ同じだけに、思う所、感じる所は様々ある。普通のサラリーマンとしては、アスリートとは比較にはならないが、体の変化は至る所に現れるし。
インタビューでもあったが、周りの人はもちろんながら、ルールも、飛型も、テクニックも、板の長さも変わって、それでもトップにいた、戻ってきた所がすごい。
そして、そのインタビューでは、金を目指す、と。これ、団体で金を目指すのは当然だが、そういう訳ではなく、平昌(ピョンチャン)で、金を目指すみたいである。確かに、それこそレジェンド。もちろん、まずは出場権を得る必要があるが。
海外でも結構記事が出ている。海外の方こそ有名、と言われていることもあるだろうが。英語記事しか読めないが、取り上げてみる。

"All these years I was disappointed by the Olympic Games. Today I just had to do it. I wanted gold but you know it is what it is," added Kasai, who became the fourth oldest winner of an individual Winter Olympics medal.
「ずっとオリンピックにはがっかりしてきた。今日はやり切るしかなかった。そして、今日は金を目指したが、それはそれだよ。」といったところか。
そして、次のセリフ。
"Jumping is my life," he said. "I want to be in Pyeongchang in 2018, I want a gold medal."
New York Timesは最初のところが良い。

そして、USA Todayは欧州ほど有名でないだけに葛西という名前こそ出さないが、むしろ一番良い写真を出している。

そして、この言葉。しっかりインタビューがNBC(米でオリンピック放送権独占する放送局)で映ったのね。ライブでも日本の放送ブースに着くまでかなり捕まっていた。
Kasai — who could still snag another medal in the team event — said he’ll definitely be back to challenge for individual gold in 2016. Via NBC: “Of course. I want to win. I want the gold medal.”
そして、このEurope 記事が結構良い。葛西がWolrd Cupに初めて出た時(1998年)には、まだストッフは1歳半だった、と。

But in the early hours of Sunday they were leading the praise on the 41-year-old Japanese, who had just won his first individual Olympic medal at his seventh Games, a large hill silver.
"I can understand him. This was his big dream. I congratulate him that he finally got what he wanted. It is an honour to fight against him," Stoch said.
Prevc agreed: "I have huge respect for Kasai. I wasn‘t even born yet when he jumped in the World Cup. He is a good motivation and an inspiration for my future jumping."
そして、永遠の葛西。まだまだどんどん良くできる、と。
"Next Olympics - I‘m going to be 45 by then, then I‘m going to be 49, but I‘m still really hopeful I‘ll be able to keep performing and improving my technique and I intend to prepare for the next Olympics to come," he said.
でも、New York Timesのノーマルヒルの直後の記事には、開会式前の時点でまだまだ終わりが先、とあるのが良い。

多少はネタにされながらも、ね。
“I will try to get to an eighth Olympics,” Kasai said matter-of-factly three days before the opening ceremony.
It was hard to tell whether Kasai was serious or simply paying lip service to his reputation as the iron man of a sport in which many jumpers retire when they reach their 30s. But given the surprising success of a jumper who is twice the age of some of his rivals here, his ambition cannot be discounted.

他の選手も勇気づける。
“He’s been jumping as long as I’ve been alive, and he’s gone through so many different styles, which is amazing,” said Nick Alexander, 25, an American ski jumper. “He’s an idol for sure, not that I want to be jumping into my 40s.”
これ、New York Timesの紙面の記事にも結構載ったのね。むしろこれこそ記事にすべきだったんじゃない、日本のマスコミの諸氏。
